The first chapter talks about the future in general and what progress means. When it starts talking about technology, there is a nice section on the definition of technology.

I have been calling myself a technologist all my life, but never before have I considered what technology means and how to define it. Thinking deeply about this straightforward sentence and trying to validate what I have seen made me believe this is the complete definition of technology.
